Help & FAQ

Answers for Syndicate by SYN Messenger on iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, and the web.

Accounts and homeservers

Your Matrix account belongs to a homeserver. Sign in with the same homeserver and credentials on each device. Your Matrix ID looks like @you:example.org; the part after the colon usually identifies your homeserver.

If SYN cannot find your server, enter its full HTTPS address or ask its administrator whether Matrix client discovery is configured.

End-to-end encryption

Encrypted-room messages are readable only by verified devices holding the correct encryption keys. Encryption cannot be disabled after it is enabled for a room.

When signing in on a new device, verify it from an existing device or use your recovery key. Messages whose keys were never backed up may remain unavailable.

Recovery and secure key storage

Secure key storage backs up encrypted-message keys to your homeserver in protected form. Keep your recovery key somewhere private and separate from your Matrix password.

Device verification

Verification confirms that a new session belongs to you. Compare the emoji or numbers shown on both devices, or verify using your recovery key. Approve only when both displays match exactly.

If you do not recognize a session, do not verify it. Sign it out from your security settings and change your password if you suspect account access.

Notification settings

Room notification rules are synchronized through your homeserver. Device-level permission is separate: SYN must also be allowed under the operating system’s notification settings.

If alerts are missing, check the room is not muted, confirm your global notification mode, and verify SYN has system permission to show notifications.

Identity-change warnings

SYN warns when a person’s cryptographic identity changes, commonly after they reset account recovery. Verify the person through a trusted channel before accepting the new identity, especially before sharing sensitive information.
