Federated
People on different homeservers can share rooms and messages. One company does not have to own the whole network.
Syndicate is a Matrix client for iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, and the web. Sign in through Matrix.org for the quickest start, or connect to a homeserver you trust—including one you run yourself.
Syndicate is the installed name of SYN Messenger: people communicating collectively on their own terms. It stands for freedom from censorship and centralized control while keeping private conversations private through end-to-end encryption.
Matrix is an open communication network. Your account belongs to a homeserver, but you can talk with people on other compatible servers—similar to email. Syndicate is the client: it signs in to your chosen server, syncs rooms, and handles encrypted conversations on your devices.

Matrix supports end-to-end encryption for private rooms. Keep your recovery key somewhere safe so you can restore encrypted history.
Use the same Matrix account in Syndicate on iPhone, Apple Watch, or web. You can also use other compatible Matrix clients.
Matrix.org is the easiest public starting point. It is operated by the Matrix.org Foundation and works with Syndicate without special configuration.
Open Syndicate Web, choose Matrix.org, and register or sign in. Your Matrix ID will look like @you:matrix.org.
Open Syndicate, enter matrix.org as your homeserver, then use the same account.
Finish device verification and save the recovery key. This protects access to encrypted history when adding devices.
Want your own domain and control plane? Deploy a Matrix homeserver on a VPS, configure TLS and federation, then enter its address in Syndicate. Synapse is the established option; lighter community servers are also available.
Your server name becomes the permanent domain in Matrix IDs. Choose it before installation—it cannot be casually changed later.
Use HTTPS, PostgreSQL, reliable email, backups, monitoring, and TURN for dependable calls. Keep the homeserver patched.
